Fall Semester 2017
My Hidden Scriptures (REL 207) class during the fall semester of 2017 will use the following texts:
- A Bible. You will need to have access to a Bible for this class. If you have one at home, please bring it. If you need to purchase one, this one is affordable and perfectly suitable for our purposes. Any Bible with an Old Testament and New Testament will be fine.
- Tony Burke, Secret Scriptures Revealed: A New Introduction to the Christian Apocrypha (Eerdmans, 2013). This will be the “textbook” for the class, and we will be using it throughout the semester. It is available in either paperback or e-book format, and you are welcome to use either. Stanley Library also has a copy of this book, and it will be on reserve at the circulation desk for the semester.
- Bart D. Ehrman, Lost Scriptures: Books that Did Not Make it into the New Testament (Oxford University Press, 2005). This book is an anthology of ancient texts. It is available in hardcover and softcover, and either is fine for our class (page numbers are the same in either format). This is a common book for classes like ours, and so used copies can generally be found for not a lot of money (less than $5 in most cases).
- Three Novels – we will be reading and analyzing these during the second half of the semester. All of them are available for cheap online.
REL 207.01 at the campus bookstore can be accessed here.
If you have questions about these texts or anything related to our class, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me via e-mail!
