World Religions (REL 151)

Fall Semester 2017

My World Religion (REL 151) class during the fall semester of 2017 will use the following texts:

  • Stephen Prothero, God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions that Run the World (HarperOne, 2011). This text will provide much of the background information for our class discussions. It is written in a highly accessible style and, because it is a common textbook in religion classrooms, used copies are cheap and readily available from a number of online booksellers. It is also available as an e-book, should you want to use it that way. This text has also been ordered through our campus bookstore.
  • Craig Martin, A Critical Introduction to the Study of Religion (2nd edition; Routledge, 2017). This text will provide the conceptual framework for the specific religious traditions that we will cover over the course of the semester. Please note that we will be using the 2nd edition of this text, not the 1st. As I write this, Amazon lists the 2nd edition as “not yet released” and available only for pre-order. This is an error, as the 2nd edition was published in March 2017. The book is available directly from the publisher (here), and for cheaper than Amazon, so I would suggest ordering from them. Of course, our campus bookstore will also have some copies available for purchase.

REL 151.01 at the campus bookstore can be accessed here.

If you have questions about these texts or anything related to our class, please  do not hesitate to get in touch with me via e-mail!
